How to Get Published
There are 4 main steps involved:
1. Write and format your basic manuscript in Word.
2. Sign up for accounts with the on demand and electronic publishers.
3. Prepare the manuscript for publishing.
4. Submit it to the publishers.
You do the first two and I do the second two for you.
What You Do
1. Write, edit and do basic formatting of your book manuscript.
2. Sign up for an account with the sales channels you choose. I provide detailed instructions on how to do this. With some limitations,
I can create your accounts for you if you prefer.
What I Do
1. Prepare your formatted manuscript according to the requirements of each publishing platform you select.
2. Submit the properly formatted manuscript to the publisher through your account with all the necessary sales information.
This way you get all the royalties paid directly to you when your book sells.
What I Need
To do my part I’ll need the following:
1. Your final, basic (not fancy) formatted manuscript preferably in Word. I’ll give you guidelines on how to do the basic formatting.
2. The photo or picture electronic files (usually jpeg files).
3. A completed Book Notes document for the details about your book. I will provide a form to fill out for this.
What You’ll Receive
1. After formatting and before I submit your book for publishing you will receive a pdf proof to review to make sure it’s the way you
want it to look. If we are doing a paperback version you can get a hard copy proof as well.
2. After your book goes live you’ll receive links to the sales channel web pages where your book is displayed to email to family,
friends and colleagues.
3. If we’ve done a paperback version, you’ll get an estore (view a sample) and link to sell your book.
4. If you choose, you can get a preview of your book listed in my ISSUU library or you can set up your own free account.
This is the place the samples of my work were created and are viewable. It’s also a source for people looking for ebooks.
5. You will get final pdf and if available, epub versions of your book.
Some of the Advantages of Publishing This Way
1. The upfront costs are minimal.
2. There is no need to purchase a set number of your books.
3. Your book is available in a number of different sales channels and you benefit from their marketing efforts.
4. If you want copies of your own book, you can purchase them at cost.
Royalties
When you publish this way the fees for producing your book come at the point of sale rather than up front. The advantage of this is you don’t have to place a huge order for your books not knowing how well they will sell. The downside is you get a smaller royalty when the book does sell. The general breakdown is as follows:
- Amazon paperback: 80% minus cost of printing if sold in eStore, 60% minus cost of printing if sold on Amazon.com
- Kindle: 70% if you price your book below $9.99
- Nook: 65% for books listed between $2.99 and $9.99
- Lulu: 90% (until the end of January)
